Understanding the Music: Carmen Sunday, March 171:30 pm (doors open at 1:00 pm) Location: Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Classroom 85 Israel Asper Way Presenter: Dr. Colette Simonot, Associate Professor of Musicology, Desautels Faculty of Music, University of Manitoba In this presentation, Dr. Simonot will examine how Georges Bizet used music not only to evoke the Spanish setting of this opera, but also to characterize Carmen as an “exotic outsider.” Issues of opera genre as they impacted the history of this work in the late 19th century will also be explored.
