Event Notes
Much of the music of Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah is rooted in folk music of Appalachia. In this presentation, musicologist Colette Simonot-Maiello explains how Floyd creates a soundscape of Tennessee in the opera by drawing on Appalachian folk music traditions, and ethnomusicologist Matthew Knight explores the parallel soundscape of Manitoba with a discussion of local folk traditions. Baritone Mel Braun and pianist Laura Loewen perform selections from their recording By the Red—Folk Songs from the Red River Valley. The event starts at 2 PM; doors open at 1:30 PM.
